The conversion of the Casa de Ovando has provided the most luxurious hotel in the country, a haven of cool elegance with stone walls and high, dark wooden ceilings. 104 rooms and 3 suites, spacious and comfortable, with marble bathroom, TV, a/c, safe box, phone and data port. The pool overlooks the river, as do many of the rooms, small well-equipped gym, massage on request, billiards and books in the lobby bar, gourmet restaurant open for all meals.

    December 2009- We ALWAYS drop by for a drink, meal or even a night or two when in Santo Domingo. This is the most fabulous setting and hotel in Santo Domingo.... FROM THEIR WEB SITE: Hostal Nicolas de Ovando, MGallery member, is located in the colonial quarter of Santo Domingo which seems to have taken you back to 1502. Listed as a World Heritage Site by Unesco, its remarkable buildings include the original home of the town's founder, Governor Nicolas de Ovando. Located on the street still known as "Las Damas", the first paved road of the New World, this palace has been renovated and turned into a 5-star hotel with swimming pool, fitness center, free Parking, free Wifi and restaurant. -Lance Horsley
